Pumping It Out – Through the Winter

Well, it’s winter-time which means it’s time for bikers to complain about the temperature, the early sunsets and their buried trails.

The boys from the UBC Okanagan Mountain Bike club have been working hard over the last few years to build an unreal pump track, and several dumps of fresh snow and below freezing temperatures weren’t going to hinder their riding.

Bas Van Steenbergen, Tom Van Steenbergen and Steven Leslie build some speed, conquer some ice and try to… flip off of pumptrack rollers? Large props to Pat McCarter, Geoff Hodson, Josh Toohill and everybody else in the UBCO MTB crew for all their hard work and trail maintenance. Also nice work Stefan Gordon for his snow shovelling.

Pablo Gonzalez Wittig is a rider from Madrid (Spain) that is funny and always joking. He’s been riding forever – downhill, all mountain, cross country or cyclocross, and we wanted to make a DH video of him. This time we were joined by David Gorcan and his friend Ismael Fernandez. Ismael is a great Spanish filmer, who has worked on national tv advertisements and full length films – he wanted to try filming downhill. The weather was fantastic and we also got some great photos from Juan Angel Triguero Melian. Enjoy!

It was a fiercely fought battle to win the favor of the crowd. Jossi Wells (NZL) tried to win the hearts of the female audience by performing with no shirt and flexing his muscles while local hero Elias Ambuehl (SUI) performed a double cork – in a bunny suit…
The final round was – in true crossover tradition – up to four completely different branches and each athlete was determined to fly the flag for his colleagues: Sebastien Toutant (CAN) for the Snowboarders, the Swiss rising star Kai Mahler for the Freeskiers, Tom Pages (FRA) for FMX and Vince Bryon (AUS) for BMX.
Only Vince Byron’s (AUS) mindblowing Triple Table Backflip & Flair on his BMX could top Tom Pages’ heartstopping Body Varial on his motocross bike. Vince Byron won over the 35’000 spectators who crowned him the well-deserved crossover.champ 2011!
